What is Brainspotting?

Brainspotting Therapy in Austin, TX

Brainspotting is a cutting-edge, brain-body therapy designed to help people process and heal from trauma, anxiety, and emotional distress stored deep in the nervous system. As a Brainspotting therapist based in Austin, I work with individuals and couples who are ready to move beyond traditional talk therapy and experience lasting change from the inside out.

Unlike conventional therapy, Brainspotting often involves significantly less talking, making it especially helpful for people who feel stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure how to verbalize their pain. Instead of focusing on storytelling, Brainspotting allows your brain to lead the way—tapping into deeper emotional and somatic processes that may be unreachable through words alone.

Trauma is any experience where you felt overwhelmed, helpless, or unsafe. Even long after the event, trauma can become “trapped” in the brain and body—impacting how we think, feel, and respond to life. These stored emotional memories can lead to symptoms like anxiety, depression, dissociation, people-pleasing, perfectionism, or chronic stress. Brainspotting helps locate and release these stuck points by identifying a specific eye position linked to the unprocessed experience.

Discovered in 2003 by Dr. David Grand, Brainspotting is based on the idea that “where you look affects how you feel.”This therapy works by accessing the subcortical brain—specifically the limbic system, amygdala, and hippocampus, which are responsible for emotion, memory, and survival responses like fight, flight, and freeze.

In session, I help you find a Brainspot—an eye position that correlates with unresolved trauma or emotional discomfort. From there, we allow your brain to begin the deep processing work, often enhanced by Biolateral sound—gentle music that alternates between the left and right ear to support brain integration and healing.

Brainspotting can be a transformative approach for anyone who:

  • Has tried talk therapy but still feels stuck

  • Struggles to access or express emotion

  • Feels overwhelmed by past trauma or anxiety

  • Experiences somatic symptoms or chronic tension

  • Wants to reduce reactivity to triggers and feel more grounded
