What is Christian Counseling?

What People Mean When They Say "Christian Counseling"

If you’re looking for Christian Counseling in Austin, Texas, you might wonder how it’s different from secular therapy. As a licensed Christian therapist in Austin, I combine clinical expertise with a faith-based perspective to help people find healing, hope, and lasting change.

People can mean a lot of different things when they say that they offer Christian Counseling. For some, in lay, non licensed settings, it might mean that they strongly base their counsel mostly, if not completely, from the Bible. Others in clinical settings may primarily use evidence-based practices and only occasionally bring faith into the session, perhaps offering a verse or prayer at the end.

My Approach as a Christian Therapist in Austin, TX

I’ve thought and prayed long and hard about what it means to me to be both clinically trained and deeply rooted in my Christian faith as I practice therapy.

First and foremost, anyone is welcome in my office, whether they follow Jesus or not. If you come from a different spiritual background (or no spiritual background at all), I will use my full clinical training to support you.

For me, this is an incredible blessing: the chance to walk with people from all different walks of life, hearing their stories, and helping them heal in ways that honor their humanity and dignity. We are all worthy of care.

However, for clients seeking Christian Counseling in Texas, I’m honored and excited to share how I practice this in session. I take a deeply integrated approach—blending clinical expertise with the truth, grace, and freedom of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Example: Faith and Psychology Working Together

Ex:
A client comes in struggling with low self-esteem, intrusive self-critical thoughts, and avoidance of social situations.

We might:

  • Explore their attachment style, how early relationships shaped their view of self and others, and move toward a more secure attachment.

  • Identify where they find their worth and identity, helping them anchor it in what Jesus says is true: that their value is not based on performance, achievements, or even self-perception, but on the finished work of Christ.

  • Work on replacing intrusive thoughts using both Scripture and cognitive techniques.

  • Use tools like Exposure Therapy, Brainspotting, or ERP to reduce avoidance and build confidence.

At the end of the day, every client is different, and I’m not the type of therapist that has specific tools and techniques I use on every single client. I hear the person’s story and what they might need in particular. The above is just an example, and it could change based on what the person sitting in front of me needs.

Why Christian Counseling Can Be Powerful

I believe that the deepest, most lasting healing comes from a relationship with Jesus. And I also believe God, in His grace, has given us incredible therapeutic tools—many of which come from “secular” psychology—that can help our brains and souls heal in rich, lasting ways.

Christian counseling offers:

  • A safe space to explore your faith and mental health together

  • Guidance that honors both Scripture and Science

  • Practical tools for real-life change, grounded in biblical truth
